A sky of a single star

This project, presented at the SACO 1.1 Biennial, was developed in collaboration with Astronomers Eduardo Unda-Sanzana (Chile) and Christian Nitschelm (France), focusing on the consequences of light pollution on Astronomy, Flora, Fauna and the people.

Device created through the reuse of spectrograph plates, wooden boxes, LED light, sound, push button and handwritten texts on walls with scientific information.

Collaborators: astronomers Eduardo Unda-Sanzana (Chile) and Christian Nitschelm (France).

Astros poetic piece written and recited by the Argentine artist Valentina Balcala.

Editing and recording by José Luis Bongiovanni from Entrenautas Producciones.

The connection with the Universe exists in an ancestral way and has always been a point of reference not only to guide us, but also to awaken the biggest questions in humanity.

A sky with a single star, which seems like a mere fantasy, will be a fact if we continue to expand our desire to illuminate everything excessively, based on the false idea that greater lighting increases security. This false security in which we live immersed is nothing more than a constant denial that distances us further every day from reality and our origin.

Two out of three people have already lost naked-eye visibility of the Milky Way and many of them can barely see the brightest stars. This, which seems irrelevant, is nothing more than the denial of the whole that we inhabit and we must recognize that our place in that whole is inevitably related to “that blue dot” that Carl Sagan knew how to invite us to discover.

Denying, something so simple that has been done for centuries, is today put into action again, blinding our eyes not only with the lights that dazzle the places we live in, but also through the screens we use. Deny, an incredible fact that has identified us and that has led us to deny the connection with the most sacred: the Universe.

Not only will future generations not be able to enjoy the night skies, but also the flora and fauna is being affected because of our light delirium.
